Yacht Charter Corfu
Corfu Town is the municipal town and harbour on the east coast of Corfu, also known as Kerkira. Lying off the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Island complex, it is the main charter base for sailing in the Ionian Sea. The Old Town of Corfu city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Venetian buildings and quaint side streets are characteristic of the old town and there is a 16th century fort overlooking it all.
The city is full of interesting shops, excellent restaurants and busy bars. There are also some very good museums and many, many churches. During the summer there are nightly musical performances of Sound & Light. The beginning of your sailing holiday can’t get much better than this.
Just 12 km away is Gouvia Marina, the largest marina in Greece. World renowned, it is a popular place for sailing yachts and superyachts from all over. To the northwest of Corfu lie the Diapontian Islands - Mathraki, Othonoi, and Erikoussa.
A mixture of sheltered coastal sailing and more adventurous open passages make Corfu a great sailing destination for sailors of all abilities. Further south are the rest of the Ionian Islands, seven altogether: Zakynthos, Lefkada, Icatha, Paxi, Antipaxi, Kythera and Antikythera.
Corfu International Airport services many European and Greek cities and is just 3km away from Corfu Town. There are frequent ferries to and from Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland and international ferry lines run from Brindisi, Bari, Ancona, Trieste or Venice in Italy.
Buses run between all the major Greek cities and Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland from where you would take a ferry.
Mostly sheltered from the summer ‘meltemi’, the sailing conditions in the Ionian are predictable and ideal. Care should be taken of the strong gusts on the Eastern sides of the islands, which are not uncommon. Harbours and marinas can get very busy and there are a lot of flotillas. Popular amongst family groups for relaxed sailing and a chance to sample the atmosphere, cuisine and tastes of these lush isles.
